In the face of global climatic changes, exploring how plant adaptation and responses to drought vary among different regions is crucial to understand and predict its geographic distribution. In this study, to explore the drought adaptation and responses of the dominant species in the semi-arid Eurasian Steppes and their differences among the species distribution regions in terms of growth, physiology and RNA-seq transcriptome, Stipa krylovii was chosen as the study object and a seed source (3 regions: eastern, middle and western regions) × soil moisture treatment (3 treatments: control, light drought and heavy drought) two-factor experiment was conducted. (1) Four growth traits for individuals from the western region were significantly lower than those from the other two regions. By Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional enrichment analysis on gene expressions of individuals from each treatment, unique enriched pathways were found mainly under heavy drought. (2) The decrease in the number of tillers with the increasing drought was much lower for individuals from the western region than those from the other two regions. By KEGG functional enrichment analysis on differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between heavy drought treatment vs control, enrichment pathways of individuals from the eastern and middle regions mainly regulated energy metabolism and metabolism of other amino acids; and those from the western region regulated biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites and carbohydrate metabolism. (3) Clustering analysis based on gene expressions separated the western region from the other two regions under the same soil moisture treatment. This study indicates that drought adaptation and response mechanisms of S. krylovii vary among different regions, especially between individuals from the western region and the other two regions. These findings are essential for us to understand the adaptive evolution of population and germplasm resource protection for this important species in semi-arid grasslands.

Environmental and individual experiences can result in immediate and persistent changes in behaviour. Often, such effects are also sex-dependent. Interspecific interactions can be one of the most important environments an individual faces. Such social interactions are expected to affect a suite of behavioural traits and their correlations. Here, we used Drosophila melanogaster and high-throughput automated behavioural phenotyping to determine how social environment (group mixed sex, group single sex, and social isolation) and sex interact to affect basic behaviours (exploration, movement within a y-maze, and habituation to a startle) that likely underlie more complex behaviours such as mate searching and foraging. We show that such behaviours and some behavioural correlations are indeed context- and sex-dependent. Males tended to show greater exploration, while females were more likely to show a habituation response to startle. Males and females from the mixed sex and isolated treatments showed opposite exploratory behaviour in the Y-maze, and social treatment interacted with sex to affect the rate of habituation to a startle. Females also tended to have slightly stronger trait correlations compared to males. These results show that social environment and sex can play a significant role in shaping behaviour in Drosophila melanogaster. Our study provides insights into how the type of social stimulation and sex can interact to affect behaviours that are important in forming critical behaviours related to foraging and mate searching.

Objective: Studies on lung metastases of extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ECC) are rare. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the influencing factors, prognosis, and treatment effects of ECC lung metastases, and to provide clinical guidance for their diagnosis and treatment. Methods: We retrieved data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database for patients with metastatic ECC (stage M1) from 2018 to 2021. The study analysed these characteristics using descriptive statistics. To calculate hazard ratios, multivariate COX regression analyses were performed. Overall survival (OS) was estimated using the Kaplan-Meyer method, and the survival of patients between groups was compared using the log-rank test. Results: A total of 762 people participated in the study, 50.4 per cent of whom were men. At the time of diagnosis, 17.8% of patients had pulmonary metastases. 52.5% received chemotherapy. Multivariate COX analysis identified lung metastases as a significant risk factor for death from metastatic ECC (HR 1.64, CI 1.32-2.03, P<0.001). Chemotherapy (HR 0.20, CI 0.17-0.25, P<0.001) and female (HR 0.80, CI 0.67-0.94, P=0.008) were associated with a better prognosis. Therefore, we further compared the prognosis and chemotherapy outcomes of male and female patients with ECC lung metastases. The median survival of male patients with and without lung metastases was 2 and 5 months, respectively (P=0.016), whereas there was no significant difference in female patients (P=0.19). Regardless of gender, patients with lung metastases had significantly worse OS even after receiving chemotherapy (P=0.0065 in the male group and P=0.0075 in the female group). Regardless of gender, patients with lung metastases who did not receive chemotherapy had significantly shorter overall survival than those who received chemotherapy. Not receiving chemotherapy vs receiving chemotherapy (male: 1 month vs 5 months, P<0.0001; female: 2 months vs 9 months, P<0.0001). Conclusion: Pulmonary metastases are an important prognostic factor in ECC and are associated with poorer survival, especially in male patients. In all patients with metastatic ECC, chemotherapy is associated with prolonged survival. Therefore, preventive measures and effective control of pulmonary metastases (such as chemotherapy), especially in male patients, may improve survival in patients with ECC.

IntroductionAngiomyofibroblastoma (AMFB) is a relatively recently described tumor in the expanding spectrum of benign mesenchymal tumors that predominantly arise in the lower genitalia of women. AMFB was first illustrated by Fletcher et al.1 as a benign soft tissue tumor of the vulvar region which should be distinguished from aggressive angiomyxoma in a series published in 1992. AMFB also occurs in men and can arise in the inguen, scrotum, spermatic cord, and bladder2. Only 23 cases of male AMF were reported in the English-language literature based on a review of PubMed data since 19923,4. In this article, we report a case of AMFB in a middle-aged male that arose in the para-vesical region. Salient histopathology, IHC, and genetic features contribute to the diagnosis of AFMB and surgical excision is curative. Our work has been documented according to the CARE guidelines.

In response to the escalating climate crisis, this study examined the dynamics of carbon absorption in the Seoul metropolitan area, focusing on the effects of urbanization and forest aging. Urban areas face increasing challenges due to climate change, necessitating a deeper understanding of how land-use changes and natural forest aging impact carbon sequestration. We assessed the spatial distribution and carbon absorption capacity of forests by categorizing the regions into urban centers, clusters, and non-urban areas. Using data from the Korea Forest Service and the National Forest Research Institute of Korea, we analyzed carbon absorption in 2013 and 2022, revealing significant shifts driven primarily by land use changes and forest aging. The results showed that urbanization led to a notable reduction in carbon absorption, with new city developments and unplanned expansions converting carbon-rich natural areas into artificial landscapes. Aging forests exhibit a decline in carbon sequestration, highlighting the need for sustainable forest management practices. This study highlighted the importance of tailoring city-specific strategies to enhance carbon absorption. This provides insights for policymakers to balance development with conservation efforts, ultimately contributing to more effective climate change mitigation in urban regions.

The escalating energy demand in today’s world underscores the need for a consistent and continuous power supply. There is a push towards promoting renewable energy sources to address this demand because of their positive impact on the environment and their widespread accessibility. Particularly in Rwanda, for the radial distribution network, the reliability improvement in electricity supply requires rectifications of power system infrastructure, including transmission, distribution system, and an increase in energy generation capacity. To evaluate the influence of renewable energy sources (RES) on the reliability of Rwanda’s power grid, Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems combined with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are introduced into the Gatumba and Ntongwe feeders. For reliability enhancement of the grid to the feeders where solar PV system and BESS are connected, protection switches are configured so that the PV systems and BESS supply the load demand in the absence of the grid, thereby increasing the generation capacity and reducing interruption frequency and duration. Simulation results from DigSILENT and PV*SOL simulation tools showed that by integrating solar PV systems with BESS to Gatumba and Ntongwe feeders, the system reliability ameliorates by 71.6% and 95.5% for system average interruption frequency and duration, respectively.

Influenza viruses continue to cause severe morbidity and remain a continuous pandemic threat. Virus challenge studies in animal models are performed during preclinical vaccine development. Improved methods are needed to improve data quality in animal models to reduce both animal stress and the animal numbers. By evaluating automated activity monitors as a tool for Influenza vaccine development, we demonstrate that activity in mice declines after viral challenge and that this reduction in activity can be prevented by vaccination. Notably, the decline in activity precedes weight loss and could thus provide an objective and early endpoint in Influenza virus challenge studies.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate and compare the accuracy, comprehensiveness, and readability of responses generated by ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4.0 to common patient questions regarding pharyngitis. Design: A cross-sectional study design was employed, wherein 30 potential patient questions regarding pharyngitis were posed to both ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4.0. The questions were categorized into general information, diagnosis, treatment and management, and complications. Setting: The study was conducted online, with evaluations carried out independently by five ENT specialists and three ENT residents using a standardized questionnaire. Participants: Five ENT specialists with over 10 years of experience and three ENT residents with more than three years of experience participated in grading the responses. Main Outcome Measures: Responses were assessed for accuracy using a four-point grading system. Readability was evaluated using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and Flesch Reading Ease scores. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square tests for accuracy and independent samples t-tests for readability. Results: ChatGPT-4.0 provided more comprehensive and accurate responses than ChatGPT-3.5, with significant improvements observed across all questions (p = 0.01). However, no significant differences were noted in specific sections (p > 0.05). Readability scores indicated both versions required a high educational level, with ChatGPT-4.0 showing marginally better readability (p < 0.05). Conclusion: While ChatGPT-4.0 showed enhanced accuracy compared to ChatGPT-3.5, both versions exhibited high reading difficulty, underscoring the need for more accessible language in AI-generated medical content. Further research is necessary to improve readability and define the safe integration of AI in healthcare.

Voltage sags are one of the primary factors in power quality issues that lead to losses for sensitive users and reduce the operation resilience of distribution networks. However, due to the lack of accessibility in sensitive users' production information, accurately quantifying the resilience of distribution networks under the impact of voltage sags is challenging. In this letter, we first define an operation resilience index using a trapezoidal curve. Considering the varying tolerance levels of sensitive users to voltage sags, a feature indices system is estabilished using the adaptive S-transform, and a sample dataset is generated through the Monte Carlo method. Finally, we establish a mapping relationship between sag characteristics and operation resilience indices using the XGBoost-Stacking algorithm. This data-physics hybrid-driven model offers a quantitative approach for developing resilience enhancement strategies.

To address the challenge of identifying true and false targets for non-cooperative passive radar (NPR) under distance deception jamming, this letter proposed a recognition method based on mutual information entropy (MIE) by combining the concept of entropy in information theory. By establishing a reference motion model as an intermediary, target measurements are transformed into the MIE dimension, where Bayesian methods are applied to establish a decision model solved via Gibbs sampling for target discrimination. This method efficiently identifies target trace points with limited measurement data and is better suited for NPR systems with unknown illuminator information compared to traditional anti-jamming methods that require multidimensional signal features. The effectiveness has been validated through simulation results.

In this study, we will investigate how expectations regarding the relationship between positivity and negativity may be informing election choices of leftist, left-wing, progressive, Democratic, and liberal-identifying individuals. We also aim to refine understanding of decision-making processes by collecting information about participants’ social identities (e.g., race, class, gender), experiences (e.g., activism participation), depression symptoms, and beliefs (e.g., political cynicism, social justice orientation). We hypothesize that participants likely to devalue reward will (I) report having been less likely and happy to vote for Biden-Harris, but more likely and happy to vote for Harris and Harris-Walz; (II) report lower felt negativity while imagining Trump-Vance winning; (III) report having been more likely to vote third-party before Biden stepped down; and (IV) that political cynicism will moderate reward devaluation. We outline our plans to assess our hypotheses via moderation analyses and nonparametric correlations, as well as propose exploratory analyses.

A shallow Fluidized Bed (FB), configured at bench-scale, was used with Digital Image Analysis (DIA) for the investigation. The extent of scatter of tracer particles throughout the bed was assessed from DIA images of defluidized powder. A novel method, employed Jupyter notebook software, which directly determined Mixing Index from the images. Remarkably, Platelet-shaped China clay powder displayed the best mixing characteristics (Mixing Index: 0.79) with no significant bypassing. Angular shaped Quartz displayed moderate mixing (Mixing Index: 0.67), but high bypassing (Bypassing Index: 0.75). Contrary to conventional assumptions, spherical diatomite exhibited poor mixing (Mixing Index: 0.61) with the highest bypassing (Bypassing Index: 0.82). Platelet particles performed well even with fines removal or larger particles addition. Most likely, particle shape significantly influenced the number of available particle contact points, tracer migration, and tracer on particle binding.

The discussion is limited to the most precise coefficients and partial variables that when taken into consideration, contribute to achieving the highest possible practical accuracy when performing this type of calculation. In a third, perhaps a fourth, fifth, and tenth side office, these scenes are repeated dozens of times.

A simple and metal-free strategy for the synthesis of β-keto phosphorodithioates has been developed through direct oxyphosphorodithiolation of vinyl azides with P4S10 and alcohols in the presence of water. The reaction is conducted at room temperature to provide a number of β-keto phosphorodithioates in moderate to good yields. This methodology has the advantages of simple operation, mild condition, broad substrate scope, and favorable group compatibility.

Background : The gift of post-mortem tissue donation is critical to pediatric CNS research. As a “Center of Excellence” for the Gift from a Child Program, our institution has a well-established post-mortem tissue donation program. Our objective was to determine if differences exist between patients that participated in and those that declined research-based autopsy. Procedure: We performed a single-institution retrospective chart review of pediatric patients with CNS malignancies who died from their disease between 1/1/2021 and 12/31/2022. Individual clinical, demographic, and socioeconomic data were assessed. Population-level data were estimated using Zip Code Tabulation Areas. Descriptive statistics were used to compare categorical data. Results : Among the 23 patient families approached during the study time frame, 8/23 (35%) consented to participation. In the consented (C) vs. declined (D) group, there was a higher percentage of White, Non-Hispanic/Latino patients by self-reported race (C: 88% vs. D: 55%) and no patients who identified as Asian or Hispanic/Latino (C: 0% & 0% vs. D: 13% & 27%). Of all patients approached, 2 required interpreters (9%) and both families declined participation. The rate of private insurance was higher in the consented group (C: 75% vs D: 47%) compared to Medicaid as primary insurance in the declined group (C: 13% vs D: 53%). Conclusions : Future research should aim to understand and improve identified disparities to ensure research advancements benefit all children with CNS malignancies. One area we plan to address is improved communication with non-English speaking families by partnering with our interpreter services.

This study is the comparative study of process capability index and process capability index for Gamma distribution. In this research, three different bootstrap confidence intervals (BCI’s) are investigated with various Gamma distribution parameters. The proposed techniques are standard, percentile, and bias corrected bootstrap confidence intervals. In the simulation study has been done in R software. The average width of the bootstrap confidence intervals (BCI’s) has been calculated for three different techniques. The width (average) of bias-corrected BSI provides a minimum value from the other two techniques. A confidence interval is a statistical range that estimates a population parameter using a sample from the population. The bootstrapping method entails generating multiple new datasets by resampling the original data, with the goal of estimating parameters. By creating a new data set, it becomes possible to estimate the empirical distribution for the parameter.

The loss and fragmentation of habitats caused by anthropogenic activities in the last decades has affected foraging habitat quality and, therefore, foraging success (food quantity, quality and foraging range) of many animals, including many pollinators. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are important pollinators of many plant species, and habitat change has also affected their ability to collect the resources they need to maintain the colony. Two important biological traits that might be affected by land use are body size and fat stores, which have the potential to affect body condition, and therefore success, and colony health. However, few studies have investigated these traits in different landscapes and different times of year. We surveyed 47 sites in three different landscape types (agriculture, urban and mixed habitats) in south-western Germany. We measured honeybee body size, wing wear and analysed body fat quantity and composition using GC-MS in the spring, summer and autumn. We found that summer honeybees were smaller in urban and mixed habitats, they showed the greatest wing wear, but they had 18.4-21.3% larger fat stores compared to agricultural sites. Bees in agricultural habitats experienced a drop in fat stores in summer, while body size remained unaffected. In autumn, just before honeybees enter the inactive winter period, bees in urban and mixed areas experienced a drop in fat stores. Wing length decreased from spring to autumn irrespective of habitat type. Our findings indicate that bees in agricultural settings experience physiological challenges in a central European region in summer, possibly because urban and mixed habitats provide better nutritional conditions during summer. Our findings, thus, confirm that honeybees undergo morphological and physiological changes in response to land use and season, which could impact their physiological condition and winter survival.

There exists a gap in the knowledge of the effect of the bird survey methods on the accuracy of estimation of bird abundance, richness, and diversity indices. To test for the interaction between survey methods and habitat, we carried out a mist net and point count monitoring study over one year in Central México in a fragment of tropical deciduous forest adjacent to a cropland and in a fragment of tropical deciduous forest area converted to park adjacent to the former fragment. We estimated bird abundance, richness, inverse of the Simpson index, the exponential of the Shannon index, and the Hill evenness index. The goal of using both methods was obvious only in the case of richness estimation: species detected by both methods could be considered for pooled analysis. Point count survey detected higher evenness in bird species set pooled for resident, endemic, migratory categories and in resident birds, and lower evenness in endemic and in migratory birds than mist nets. For most bird categories there was no significant relationship between bird abundances assessed with both methods. The analysis of the method-habitat interaction allowed us to infer that for pooled bird categories, and for endemic and migratory species the evenness was larger in the park, and in resident birds it was larger in the forest. Although it was impossible to estimate the true value of different indices or the true shape of different relationships, the combination of methods allowed us to conclude if a given index was either larger or smaller in given habitat. Here, we propose the use of at least two survey methods not to sum or to average the indices estimated (excepting richness) but rather to infer the direction of the change of a given diversity estimator in line with the change of the habitat type.

This inconsistency has fascinated ecologists for decades. However, incorporating adaptive processes into ecologically realistic networks with both antagonistic and mutualistic interactions is still a challenge. Here, we explored an adaptive food-web model to evaluate how the evolution of foraging preference (behaviour trait) to determine the relationship between network complexity (e.g., connectance) and stability (e.g., community persistence) in a multiplex community with multiple interaction types (MEST: mutualist-exploiter-specialist predator-top predator). Our theoretical results showed: (i) adaptive foraging of the top predator contributes to the stability of mutualism and intermediate intensity of foraging adaptation can lead to chaotic dynamics in a four-species MEST community; (ii) the connectance-stability relationship may show positive monotonic, negative monotonic, peaked and double-peaked patterns in general MEST communities, while the double-peaked pattern is only obtained when both the adaptation intensity and interspecific competition are high. Moreover, we infer that foraging adaptation of the top predator may alter positive and/or negative feedback loops (trait-mediated indirect effects) to affect the stability of the MEST community. Finally, our theoretical predictions may be consistent with both the negative monotonic complexity-stability relationship revealed in freshwater communities and the peaked pattern revealed in marine communities. Our adaptive dynamics framework may provide an effective way to address the complexity-stability debate in real ecosystems.
