Crack initiation in AISI 316 stainless steel has been investigated. Persistent Slip bands (PSBs) were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). PSBs on the surface of the material increase the surface roughness and result in crack initiation. EBSD data from near the crack initiation region were used to correlate the global and local misorientations of the grains, plastic deformation, and Schmid Factor with the fatigue life of specimens. The crack initiation region was found to have the highest misorientations. The region near crack initiation was found to have more plastic deformation, which was severe in specimens loaded with higher stresses. The Kernel Average Misorientation (KAM) and Grain Reference Orientation Deviation (GROD) maps from the EBSD data were investigated for specimens that failed at different fatigue cycles. It was found that the interaction of high dislocation density, substructuring and misorientation of low-angle grain boundaries in the region of plastic deformation resulted in the fatigue crack initiation.

Background: Iron deficiency anemia is common in adolescent females due to onset of menses. Treatment options include enteral ferrous sulfate (PO), intravenous iron sucrose (IS), and intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FC). The costliness of each method in this population is unknown. Methods: A decision analysis model evaluated these strategies in three adolescent female subgroups (AM = average BMI with moderate anemia, SA = average BMI with severe anemia, and OM = obese BMI with moderate anemia) comparing costs from a healthcare perspective. A literature review was performed to obtain model parameters. The effectiveness term was successful repletion, which was assumed identical for each strategy. Model time horizon was three months. One-way sensitivity analyses evaluated model uncertainty. Results: For AM, IS was least costly at $532 (vs. $592 for PO and $856 for FC). Varying the PO success likelihood and clinic visits needed could favor PO. In the SA group, PO was least costly at $853 (vs. $856 for FC and $936 for IS). Variation in infusions needed for IS (and therefore anemia severity) alters the preferred strategy, with IS favored for 1-4 infusions, PO favored for 5-6 infusions, and FC favored for 7 or more infusions. In the OM group, PO was preferred, costing $764 compared to $798 for IS and $856 for FC. IS was less costly at weights < 74kg (base case value 90kg). Conclusion: The costliness of iron repletion strategies depends on patient specific factors. Weight, anemia severity, and likelihood of PO adherence are important characteristics to consider.

2D LiDAR simultaneous localization and mapping(SLAM) often encounters issues such as registration failures, cumulative errors, and low scan repeatability, which prevent the construction of consistent and accurate maps. To address these challenges and reduce the need for remapping, this study proposes an interactive solution for 2D LiDAR SLAM, commonly used in AGVs, by manually adding or modifying constraints. However, for large-scale environments, manually adding and correcting constraints can be highly labor-intensive and difficult. To overcome this, an automatic loop closure detection and edge enhancement strategy was developed. A multi-scale loop closure detection algorithm enables fast loop closure detection, while the edge enhancement strategy revisits the pose graph to reduce overall error. Additionally, a GUI application was developed to visualize the pose graph, edges, and node information, allowing for interactive batch optimization. Finally, several experiments were conducted to demonstrate the performance improvements achieved by the proposed method.

This study assessed the reliability and internal consistency of scales measuring parental and peer support for physical activity in Chilean children and adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 160 youth from Viña del Mar, Chile. Parental support was measured using the Family Support for PA Scale, and peer support through the Friends Support for PA Scale. The Family Support for PA Scale showed satisfactory reliability (Cronbach’s alpha >0.70), with improvements in the second evaluation, except for girls. It also demonstrated strong internal consistency and moderate to high reliability for most questions. The Friends Support for PA Scale showed sufficient internal consistency, but reliability varied, ranging from low to moderate. In conclusion, both scales can be valuable tools for assessing social support for physical activity among Chilean youth.

Recent developments in ethology and animal ethics have put pressure on the view that nonhuman animals should be described as moral patients, namely, as beings towards whom we have obligations but cannot owe duties to others. Within the debate on animal morality, some authors, and most influentially, philosopher Christine Korgsaard, have argued that animals cannot be moral agents because they lack normative self-government. This article poses an empirical challenge to Korsgaard’s account of moral agency by shedding light on the literature on human beings’ moral development. In this paper, I examine three possible strategies that Kantians like Korsgaard could use to make sense of children’s and teenagers’ moral capacities: (1) accept that most younger children who are incapable of normative self-government could be moral agents, (2) admit that older children and teenagers can be moral agents, or (3) deny altogether than children and teenagers can be moral agents. However, I argue that these three strategies are unsuccessful. As concluding remarks, I also highlight how gradualist and multi-faceted accounts of moral agency can better make sense of the puzzling case of children’s and teenagers’ moral capacities.

The Concealed Information Test (CIT) is frequently used to determine the presence of crime-related information in a suspect’s memory. In this paper, we conducted a meta-analysis to test the validity of the CIT to differentiate between guilty and innocent individuals based on ampli-tude differences of the P300 component of the event-related potential. We included experimental studies that used either the mock-crime paradigm or the personal-item paradigm. The results show a large mean effect size (d*) of 1.70 for the P300. Moderation analysis showed that P300 effects in CIT are affected by the choice of paradigm (personal item vs. mock-crime paradigm), the chosen trial protocol (complex vs. original) and the likelihood of subjects to employ countermeasures. Based on our findings, we conclude that the P300 is useful to determine the presence of crime-related information and that people interesting in using the CIT should use the mock-crime paradigm with the complex trial protocol.

Aim: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy represents a revolutionary immunotherapy and cutting-edge strategy for cancer treatment. However, the pharmacological safety of this approach in the endocrine system has yet to be sufficiently validated. This study aims to explore the potential toxicity signals of CAR T-cell therapy in the endocrine system and their clinical relevance. Methods: This study utilized data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, covering 2017 to the first quarter of 2023 (Q1). Signal detection of adverse events was achieved through the information component method combined with the reporting odds ratio method. Results: A total of 34,216,716 records were available in the FAERS database, and 60,730 records were screened for CAR T-cell therapy as the primary or secondary suspected agent, identifying 12 positive endocrine signals (preferred term), which represent a rare occurrence in the existing literature on CAR T-cell therapy. Hyperglycemia topped the list with 42 reported cases (ROR025=1.01), followed by hypercalcemia (n=26,ROR025=1.45) and adrenal insufficiency (n=15,ROR025=0.66). Exophthalmos-related reports for tisagenlecleucel therapy showed the highest death rate among the positive signals detected (5/6, 83.3%). Adverse event reports related to conditions with fatal outcomes, such as adrenal insufficiency (7/15, 46.7%), and hypercalcemia (13/25, 52.0%), demonstrate significant overlap with cytokine release syndrome (CRS). Conclusions: It is crucial for healthcare professionals to closely monitor the potential adverse events related to the endocrine system that may arise from CAR T-cell therapy. Background: This study aimed to establish a Severity Scale for influenza and other acute respiratory infections (ARI), requiring hospitalization, for surveillance and research purposes (the SevScale). Such a scale could aid the interpretation of data gathered from disparate settings. This could facilitate pooled analyses linking viral genetic sequencing data to clinical severity, bringing insights to inform influenza surveillance and the vaccine strain selection process. Methods: We used a subset of data from the Global Influenza Hospital Surveillance Network database, including data from different geographical areas and income levels. To quantify the underlying concept of severity, an item response model was developed using sixteen indicators of severity related to the hospital stay. Each patient in the dataset was assigned a Severity Score and a Severity Category (low, medium, or high severity). Finally, we compared the model scores across different subgroups. Results: Data from 9 countries were included, covering between 4 and 11 seasons from 2012 to 2022, with a total of 96,190 ARI hospitalizations. Not for all severity indicators data was available for all included seasons. Subgroups with a high percentage of patients in the High Severity Category included influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, age ≥50, lower-middle income countries, and admission since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: The initial model successfully highlighted severity disparities across patient subgroups. Repeating this exercise with new, more complete data would allow recalibration and validation of the current model. The SevScale proved to be a promising method to define severity for influenza vaccine strain selection, surveillance and research.

Body leaning (indicating directional movements of approach or avoidance) and sway (indicating reduced mobility or freezing) are often used to assess respectively approach/avoidance and freezing in response to emotional stimuli. These responses are typically quantified using force plates that monitor the displacement of the Center of Pressure. In this article, meta-analytical analyses were conducted to synthesize findings from 44 studies (total N participants = 1756) identified from 5 databases, that manipulated the valence of stimuli displayed —pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant—and measured corresponding body sway and leaning. The analyses revealed significant heterogeneity in the reported effects across the studies. Overall, only contrasting pleasant to unpleasant conditions (vs contrasting pleasant to neutral, or unpleasant to neutral conditions) resulted in a small meta-analytical effect size. Moderating variables such as the type of design used and the duration of exposure to stimuli question the nature of the effects reported in the literature and indicate a risk of potential confounding variables. Recommendations for future studies, with an emphasis on mitigating false negative rate by ensuring a large enough sample size, are discussed.

As an effort towards vaccine development against African trypanosomiasis, we studied key parasite molecules that mediate VSG functions, specifically the major surface protease-B of Trypanosoma brucei that catalyzes proteolytic removal of old VSGs for expression of new ones, an important stage-specific function that allows the parasite to survive in its host, thus making it an attractive candidate for vaccine development. Herein, Tbmsp-b gene was cloned into a pVAX-1 plasmid to produce pVAX-1-Tbmsp-b construct for DNA vaccine trials. BALB/c mice were immunized by intradermal injection with 100 µg dose of the construct thrice on days 0, 21 and 42, then inoculated with 2000 parasites on day 56. Anti-trypanosomes specific antibody (IgG) and cytokine (γ-IFN) were monitored by ELISA from sera of immunized and unimmunized mice. Immunized mice showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher IgG and γ-IFN responses, lower parasitaemia (by 75% and 51.2% of parasitaemic scores on first and fifth week of infection) and longevity by up to 22 days compared to unimmunized mice. These results showed that the construct provided partial protection to virulent T. b. brucei (Federe strain) infection in susceptible BALB/c mice suggesting the potentials for using MSP-B as an antigen in DNA vaccine development against African trypanosomiasis.

This study focuses on the design, implementation and performance evaluation of a new irrigation and open-channel module into the well-known Topkapi distributed model. The Topkapi was implemented through the PyTopkapi library. The research framework encompasses the integration of an irrigation simulation module alongside a sophisticated kinematic wave model, designed to emulate the intricate dynamics of surface flow transport in irrigation channels, thereby enriching the structural composition of the overall model. The performance of the improved model was tested in the Achibueno River basin (Chile) strategically positioned in the southern reaches of the Maule region, encompassing a substantial land expanse of 1578 km 2 with a very important agricultural activity and a subsequent important presence of open-channels for its water distribution network. The dataset utilized for this comprehensive assessment spans a temporal continuum from 1979 to 2005 and has been meticulously curated from the historical archives of the CR2 institution. The evaluation of model performance is executed through the application of the Nash and Nash-ln coefficients, enabling a nuanced understanding of the model’s proficiency. Two distinct scenarios are meticulously considered throughout the assessment: one wherein the irrigation module is absent from the model configuration, and another wherein the irrigation module is integrated into the model’s structural framework. The findings emanating from our results underscore a discernible augmentation in the operational efficiency of PyTopkapi to the extent of approximately 17% when the irrigation module is applied (NSE moving from 0.63 to 0.74 for the calibration period and 0.54 to 0.64 for the validation period). This heightened efficiency manifests notably during the transport of flow through channels, where the kinematic wave model plays a pivotal role in orchestrating the dynamics of surface water movement.

This study aims to explore how sustainable knowledge management (SKM) influences green technology innovation (GTI) and enduring performance within construction companies. It further examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the relationship between SKM and green human capital (GHC). Data was collected through a survey of 309 construction companies in Pakistan, and hypothesis testing was conducted using AMOS-24 and SPSS PROCESS macro software. The results indicated that SKM positively affects both GTI and long-term performance. Key elements of green intellectual capital (GIC), such as green structural capital, green relational capital, and green human capital, were identified as important mediators in the relationship between SKM and GTI, as well as between SKM and sustainabl e performance. Additionally, AI was found to significantly affect the connection between SKM and GHC. These findings offer significant theoretical and practical insights for organizations and policymakers. The research contributes to the knowledge-based view of the firm by providing empirical evidence of how different GIC components mediate the relationships among SKM, GTI, and sustainable performance. Practically, the results suggest that investing in SKM and GIC can enhance GTI and long-term performance.

Nest sharing by birds, or the phenomenon where multiple individuals of different species contribute genetically and parentally to a single nest, is a rare form of cooperative breeding that has only occasionally been reported in socially monogamous birds. Here we describe, both behaviorally and genetically, the unique case of two female birds, a western kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis) and a western kingbird x scissor-tailed flycatcher (T. forficatus) hybrid simultaneously occupying (and likely co-incubating) a brood in a single nest. Both females provisioned nestlings, and they did this in two consecutive years (producing four fledglings each year). Genomic data from the females revealed that they were unrelated and parentage analyses revealed that both females contributed genetically to at least one of the offspring, and at least two fathers were involved. In total, this is the first reported case of nest sharing involving a hybrid individual and the first case within the family Tyrannidae.

The construction industry, characterized by high energy use and carbon emissions, necessitates a thorough and accurate life cycle assessment (LCA). This review investigates how building information modeling (BIM) software can streamline the LCA process to improve both efficiency and precision. Although BIM has considerable potential, challenges remain, such as issues with software interoperability and a lack of standardized options for BIM-integrated LCA tools. The review also evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of various BIM software, LCA tools, and energy consumption tools, and highlights case studies of BIM-LCA integration. It provides a critical analysis of methods and techniques for BIM-LCA integration and data exchange, including the import of bills of quantities, Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), the use of BIM viewers, direct LCA calculations with BIM plugins, and calculations using LCA plugins. The study concludes with future outlooks, aiming to direct the development of improved LCA tools that offer better integration with BIM software, which is crucial for advancing sustainable construction practices.

This paper aims at analyzing the role of digital technologies particularly social networks together with other social media applications that translate grassroots initiatives into global social movements. An extension of the technology leverages the oppressed and hidden voices being heard and VIOLENCE faster mobilization as witnessed in the black lives matter and the Arab spring. But it is important to mention that the threats such as digital vigilance fake news and slacktivism also emerge clock threatening to supplant real activism. The results indicate that technology improves the performance of social movements but that activists should be aware and reflective when adopting these tools to their cause. They emerge from collective injustice, unequal treatment and advocacies for change, and mainly organized around certain causes like the black people, gay rights, climate changes and the poor. In the past social movements have been vital helping to form societies such as the abolitionist movement, women’s suffrage movement, and civil rights movement \cite{2006}. These movements have employed print media including hand bills and power point presentation, oral communication inclusive of speeches, and nonverbal communication including demonstrations and parade. This paper holds the social theory that the advancement of technology has impacted social movements. While different technologies such as the printing press succeeded by telephones and television have aided activists in spreading information more accurately and getting to the wider population. But the most drastic change that has occurred in the war is in the information age. With the help of Internet and mobile equipments everyone can get information and can communicate and organize immediately. Twitter, face book and Instagram has proven to be vital in-way the activists reaches out to the public, share messages, organize supporters and narrate events as they happ en. Its effect has not only increased the rate of Social movements, but also increasing the influence rate of other movements other than traditional establishments at the grassroots level.   Therefore, the aim of this paper is to understand the part played by technology in different social movements today by analyzing how technology impacts activism. It seeks to discuss the significance of these changes in so far as they would affect everybody and technology as an activist tool – the positive and remarkable side, and the several undesirable side effects which have accompanied it. This paper focuses on the exploration of the link between technology and social movements in a bid to understanding how to champion the cause behind these tools. This research articulates its central thesis in the argument that technology has only served to heighten, disperse, and transform activism in today’s society. Through enabling quick mobilization, improving communication and increasing the horizons of social movements, technological intervention is an important instrument in supporting social change. But it also raises fundamental questions about the impacts of digital engagement – distorting, dominating and raising hopes of creating merely shallow relationships. The structure of this paper will unfold as follows: First of all, let us consider the historical background of social movements indicating their development and principal instances. In the subsequent section, we will discuss the technological enabling capability with prime focus on relevant emerging technologies’ timeline starting from pre-digital age to contemporary time. Building on this, we will then examine different actual social movements of the contemporary society, demonstrating the technology integration in those movements. Last, we will look into the trends which may be seen in the technology and how it will affect the activism, benefits and drawbacks that may be experienced. Ultimately, it is the hope of the paper to utilize this exploration to offer a complex analysis of the manner in which technology informs existing models of social movements and the acts of social justice within the modern world.HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF SOCIAL MOVEMENT AND TECHNOLOGYPre-Digital Era Movements Social movements earlier are mainly with detailed organizational formation and personal contact interactions. Civil rights movement and the feminist movement especially could not have operated for most of it without in-person assemblies, speeches, and printing of fliers. For example, the civil rights movement of the 1950 and 1960 meant that activists used local churches and community centres as social meetings places where they planned protests, sit-down and boycotts against racial discrimination. Historic actions like the march on Washington back in 1963 actually required intense networking because the kind of support one receives today could not be attained back then without networking and the pleasure for this gathering was obtained through simple group action \cite{Tarrow_1998}. Similarly, meetings in group formation, protests, and use of fliers and banners were common protests of the Feminist movement especially the second wave movement of the 1960s and 1970s that demanded abortion rights and equal employment opportunities for women and opposition to domestic violence. There are instances like the Women’s Liberation Movement where they protested against the invasion of their bodies and physically demanding the officials make check of it or the Miss America Protest in 1968 whereby protestors just aggressively demanded for awareness of their check. The focus on community engagement together with physical presence demonstrated commitment of activists for change despite lack of use of electronic media. Technology's Early Role in Activism Although technology had started to play a role in activism many years prior, it was not a significant role until the following years. Even earlier technologies demonstrate that, while face-to-face communication characterized social movements before the advent of the digital age, earlier technologies also started to figure prominently in activism as well. Newspapers were one of the first mobilization channels; people could publish their material and spread the messages of activists. The nature of the paper that William Lloyd Garrison wrote titled “The Liberator” was very important to the campaign in question because it was the paper of the abolitionists. Radio and television also dramatically advanced activism since the activism messages could reach many people in a short span. During the civil rights movement, demonstrations and police misconduct were reported by television and amazed the country. Today, ideologically decentralized global campaigns of Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street, and #MeToo movements identify the role of people’s involvement and interpersonal communication. Nevertheless, the benefits of having inclusiveness, having more resilience and the potentiality of innovations that stem from decentralization argue for this new model of activism. Therefore, the study of the leadership styles of diverse decentralized movements persists within the development of advanced society, and social activism in general for people who demand change in an interconnected world.ROLE OF DATA, SURVEILLANCE, AND PRIVACY IN SOCIAL MOVEMENTS Integration of technologies into social movements remains a double-edged sword with respect to Government surveillance, privacy and the impact of big data. In addition, the tracking of data enables the governments to obtain general and specific records of activists right from their affiliations, their links and frequently, places of residence. A level of control such as this in social mobilization becomes very questionable when those who speak out online are threatened or prosecuted for their freedom of speech \cite{tufekci2017}.Privacy Concerns In response to these threats, privacy concerns have become one among the important areas that activists can identify and be concerned about. It has also made the co-ordination and organization of protest and demonstrations to an extent that it is now possible to start a movement that gains popularity with in record time. On the one hand, social medias give people the possibility to stay informed and find the truthful information concerning the nature of social movements, and on the other – it is very easy for those, who want to spread the fake information, to do so. Finally, algorithms take a powerful position in deciding which movements get to be viewed, let alone which ones are promoted and which ones are occluded. These dynamics must however be well managed by different social movements as they advance technology in the society to ensure their messages get through and are well understood; and most importantly, people have confidence and trust that the information they are receiving is credible.
