The Indian Medical Service (IMS), established by the British colonial government, played a crucial role in both military and civilian healthcare in India until its disbandment post-independence. In recent years, the need for a similar central healthcare service cadre has been highlighted, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed critical gaps in healthcare system and emergency management. The re-establishment of a service cadre for doctors like the IAS and IPS, may become a potential solution to India’s healthcare challenges. It would address healthcare inequality by ensuring the equitable distribution of medical professionals, particularly in rural areas, strengthen government health facilities, and reduce the burden on healthcare workers. Along with this, a medical service cadre could provide better legal protections and personal development opportunities for healthcare workers while ensuring uniform healthcare standards across the country. Reviving the IMS is not just an ideal but a pressing necessity to create a resilient, equitable, and efficient healthcare system in India.
