Dr. Chunzeng Wang is a professor in earth and environmental sciences with expertise in geology and GIS at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI). He earned BS in exploration geology from Guilin College of Geology, China in 1984, MS in structural geology from China University of Geosciences, China in 1989, and PhD in earth and environmental sciences from the City University of New York in 2001. He taught geology at Queens College and Hunter College before moving to Maine in 2005. His research includes geology, tectonics, and mineral resources in Northern Appalachians of Maine since 1997 and in China for several decades. In China, he collaborates with several research partners of Chinese universities and Chinese Academy of Sciences with focus on South China tectonics and magmatic-hydrothermal mineralization. In Maine, he started with the Norumbega fault zone. His most recent bedrock maps about the fault zone are the Chemo Pond and The Horseback quadrangles published in 2020. Since 2016, his work in Maine focuses on Northern Maine, beginning with the Munsungun inlier and later extending to the Winterville inlier, the Weeksboro-Lunksoos Lake Belt, and the Number Nine Mountain terrane. His work has been funded by the USGS STATEMAP program and Maine Geological Survey. Since 2022, he also works on a USGS Earth MRI-funded project entitled “Geologic mapping of manganese-bearing deposits in Aroostook County, Maine”.
