• A new framework estimates how sea surface temperatures boosted by climate change influence tropical cyclone intensities • Hurricane intensities during 2019-2023 were 8.3 m s −1 faster, on average, than they would have been in a world without climate change • 84% of hurricanes during 2019-2023 had significantly higher intensities due to attributable local SST warming since 1900
