Harvest-based Initiatives (HBI) are local communities’ responsible use of wildlife resources to raise living standards and reduce unlawful activities in protected areas. It includes fishing, beekeeping, local hunting, and other resources. Although it has the potential for conservation and supporting livelihoods, it is not well-known in some areas of Tanzania. This study examines the implementation and management of HBI in the Ugalla game reserve and the challenges it encounters to ensure the sustainable utilisation of wildlife resources. We gathered data from 141 trade union members using a semi-structured questionnaire pre-tested with 30 members. Data collected included general characteristics, criteria for joining a union, participation in HBI, and challenges faced. We performed a reliability analysis test and a validity check to ensure the questionnaires are trustworthy and the data collected was accurate. Descriptive data were analysed using percentages, and the Chi-square test (X2) and generalised linear model were used to determine differences and factors affecting community decision-making satisfaction. Qualitative data from professional and trade union leaders were analysed using content analysis. Results showed significant involvement of trade union members in decision-making and a strong correlation between membership and satisfaction. Challenges faced included corruption, closing fishing camps, poaching, change of game reserve managers, hunting companies, and awareness of game reserve laws. Local communities set conditions for HBI participation and exclude those without legal access to wildlife resources. If there are any issues regarding the practice, then they are addressed through negotiation between the trade union and the game management. Additionally, groups that share the same ethnicity tend to adhere to established norms, taboos, traditions, and historical practices in managing wildlife resources to sustain the well-being of their local communities. Due to degradation and non-pollution, ester materials have become an important topic in ecological restoration; however, ester materials are artificial materials with problems such as high resource consumption and cost. Therefore, finding a scientific substitution for ester materials is key to lowering the cost. In this study, we use weathered red-bed soil to replace a portion of ester materials. We performed orthogonal coupled compounding and ecological effect tests and analyzed the soil improvement mechanism based on the mineral composition, soil structure, and electrical conductivity properties of weathered red-bed soil. The results showed that the improved soil’s strength increased significantly, as did its structure (greater increases in water content, swelling, conductivity, permeability coefficient, and cohesion). Plant germination and height increased by 55% and 37 mm, respectively, in ratio of 15 g/m 2 absorbent ester material, 2.5 g/m 2 adhesive ester material, and 5% weathered red-bed soil, and the amount of ester material could be further lowered by 75%. The weathered red-bed soil changed the physical, mechanical, and hydraulic properties by changing the soil structure; thus, improving the ecological effects. This study provides a theoretical basis for ecological protection using weathered red-bed soil substitute for some ester materials.

This article improves the mobility part of the ASM GaN model, and provides the corresponding multi-temperature DC parameter extraction process based on the existing ASM GaN model, in order to address the accuracy of the ASM GaN model at different working environment temperatures in AlGaN/GaN HEMT Devices. In addition, this article validates the accuracy of the improved ASM model through parameter fitting. Compared with previous models, the modified model has higher accuracy and fewer temperature parameter values in the parameter extraction process at multiple temperatures.

This study analyzes the relationship between Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, vaginal microecological, and cervical lesions to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer (CC) in the Xinjiang region. qRT-PCR was used for HPV genotyping and viral load.The Gram staining and dry biochemical enzyme kit were utilized to diagnose vaginal secretions.The positive rate of HPV infection and vaginal microecological indicators was compare by χ 2 test. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between vaginal microecological evaluation indicators and HPV infection with the grade of cervical lesions. The HPV infection rate among women in the Xinjiang region is 30.29%, of which single HPV infection accounts for 77%. HPV16 and HPV52 are the main infection types. There are significant differences in the HPV infection rate and infection types among the Han, Uighur, Hui, and Kazakh ethnic groups. The viral load of HPV16 and HPV52 increases with the upgrade of cervical lesions. There are significant differences in vaginal microecological evaluation indicators H 2O 2, SNA, LE, GUS, trichomonas, clue cells, and lactobacilli among different ethnic groups. HPV negative patients with varying grades of cervical lesions exhibit a notable variance in H 2O 2 and LE, which is statistically significant. single HPV infection and high viral load HPV significantly increase the risk of CC. This study indicate that the HPV infection and vaginal microecological are differences among ethnic groups, Which have a strong correlation with the progression of CC, Offering guidance on CC screening and interventions in the Xinjiang area.

Modern mobile robots require precise and robust localization and navigation systems to achieve mission tasks correctly. In particular, in the underwater environment, where Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) cannot be exploited, the development of localization and navigation strategies becomes more challenging. Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) strategies have been analyzed and tested to increase navigation accuracy and take into account the entire history of the system state. In particular, a sensor fusion algorithm relying on a MAP technique for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) has been developed to fuse information coming from a monocular camera and a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) and to consider the landmark points in the navigation framework. The proposed approach can guarantee to simultaneously locate the vehicle, thanks to the onboard sensors, and map the surrounding environment with the information extracted from the images acquired by a bottom-looking optical camera. Optical sensors can provide constraints between the vehicle poses and the landmarks belonging to the observed scene. The DVL measurements have been employed to solve the unknown scale factor and to guarantee the correct vehicle localization even in absence of visual features. After validating the solution through realistic simulations, an experimental campaign at sea was conducted in Stromboli Island (Messina), Italy. In conclusion, an algorithm, which works with the Poisson surface reconstruction method to obtain a smooth seabed surface, for mesh creation has been developed.

The in vitro transcription (IVT) reaction used in the production of mRNA vaccines and therapies remains poorly quantitatively understood. Mechanistic modeling of IVT could inform reaction design, scale up, optimization, and control. In this work, we develop a mechanistic model of IVT to include nucleation and growth of magnesium pyrophosphate crystals and subsequent agglomeration of crystals and DNA. A novel quantitative description is included for the rate of transcription as a function of target sequence length, DNA concentration, and T7 polymerase concentration. The model explains previously unexplained trends in IVT data and quantitatively predicts the effect of adding the pyrophosphatase enzyme to the reaction system. The model is validated on additional literature data showing an ability to predict transcription rates as a function of RNA sequence length.

In this work, different prediction models of poly-crystalline PV performance in Jordan are studied based on experimental results, analytical, and machine learning models. Two types of PV grid connected systems working at Applied Science Private University in Amman-Jordan, having a power capacity of 5 KWp each were involved in study. These two PV systems are fixed with tilt angle of 11 ◦ which are: poly-crystalline south directed, and poly-crystalline EW directed (which means that half of these PV modules directed to the east and the other half is directed to the west). Both PV systems have been trained via linear regression, LASSO, ElasticNet in addition to ANN algorithms. Linear regression model surpasses all the other three models when compared by different performance measures. The results for poly-crystalline EW directed PV system show that the yearly analytical electrical power generation is 1433.9 KWh/KWp, where the value of error equals 3.12% as compared with experimental value. Whereas the yearly electrical power generation by prediction using linear regression is 1510.45 KWh/KWp, where the value of error equals 2.1% as compared with experimental value. In the case of poly-crystalline south directed PV system, the yearly analytical electrical power generation is 1772.9 KWh/KWp, where the value of error equals 7.89% as compared with experimental value. Whereas the yearly electrical power generation by prediction using linear regression is 1658.15 KWh/KWp, where the value of error equals 1.5%. Also, the results show that the productivity of poly-crystalline south directed PV system is better than the poly-crystalline EW directed system with power gain equals 23.64% using analytical method, equals 10.43% using experimental method, and equals 9.77% using prediction by linear regression.

Rationale: Ion chromatography combined with inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry is an ideal tool for measuring low concentrations of anionic species such as phosphite; however, the high concentration of chloride and other anions in natural solutions may negatively impact chromatographic separation and data quality. Method: We developed an on-line mechanism of removing chloride from the sample within the ion chromatograph, using an additional valve and a separation column that transfers chloride to waste while phosphite and most other anions are retained. We installed this system in a coupled IC-ICPMS system (ICS6000 and Element 2 in medium resolution mode) and determined linearity and detection limits. In addition, we measured phosphorous species by NMR for comparison as an alternative method for phosphite determination. Results: Chloride was fully removed from the samples while phosphite was retained and could be analysed by IC-ICPMS. Concentrations could be measured down to 0.003 µmol/L and possibly less with good linearity over the explored range (up to 1.615 µmol/L; r 2 = 0.999). In contrast, the detection limit by NMR was 6.46 µmol/L. Conclusions: The on-line removal mechanism works well for simplifying sample matrices. It removes the need for costly pre-analytical sample treatment with OnGuard columns. We confirm that IC-ICPMS is the most powerful technique for quantifying phosphite in natural solutions. The new Cl-removal method may also be applicable to analyses of other anions.

Recent agreements have strengthened and expanded ongoing international commitments to protect and restore native habitats. Nevertheless, how such commitments should be implemented has been historically controversial, and nuances in ongoing debates are often misunderstood, hindering biodiversity conservation. We propose three unequivocal principles that must be central to how area-based biodiversity conservation will occur in the coming decades. These principles relate to habitat coverage, amount, and connectivity, and their enunciation clarifies apparent contradictions in the literature. We explain why socio-economic considerations that are central to current biodiversity conservation cannot override these principles. Biodiversity must be supported everywhere on Earth, especially when considering the right of human population to access nature and to benefit from countless ecosystem services.

Background: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is common in Asian countries, particularly during the childbearing years. Aims: Multiple approaches have been suggested, including medical management and surgical intervention, but there is no consensus among experts regarding the preferred approach for patients with granulomatous mastitis. Methods: The study was a retrospective cohort study, the patient’s file was examined with the diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis. All patients underwent tissue examination before treatment. Different therapeutic approaches were examined. The negative pathology of the patients for breast malignancies, or other types of mastitis and the final diagnosis of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis according to the para clinic, were principal conditions for admission in our study. The sample size is 44 people, due to the rarity of the disease and the limited number of samples to be studied, sampling was carried out by the census method of all IGM patients who were referred to the selected training and treatment centers Results: The average age of the individuals was 37.43 ± 08.7 The most common presentation was in the form of a mass in 26 patients (77%), and 26 patients (59.1%) had a history of recent pregnancy and lactation, while 16 patients (36.4%) were using OCP (Oral Contraceptive Pills). Ultimately, 27 patients (61.4%) were in remission, and 6 patients (13.6%) experienced a relapse after 6 months. Only the previous treatment showed a significant association with complete remission, while involvement on the opposite side showed a significant association with disease relapse after 6 months. Conclusion: In the present study, it was found that the most common symptom among patients was the occurrence of a mass. Furthermore, it was determined that the type of treatment and symptoms did not have a significant impact on the treatment outcome in terms of relapse or remission. The only significant association observed was between previous treatment with disease remission and the bilateral nature of symptoms with disease relapse.

Beetle hindwings have two distinct features: the deployable configuration and wing corrugation. At low Reynolds numbers, the corrugated wing of flapping insect wings is considered essential in improving the favorable aerodynamic forces. To further explore whether significant corrugated structure parameterized combination exists has a significant effect on aerodynamic effects, this paper proposes three technical comparison airfoils learned from the microscopy imaging of ladybird beetle hindwing: corrugated hindwings from ladybird beetle Harmonia axyridis (CA models), simplified airfoil with triangular corrugations (TWA models), and a symmetric flat plate wing (FPA model). Based on ANSYS Fluent, this paper numerically solves the Navier-Stokes equations using the fluid-structure interaction method. The results show that (1) the aerodynamic performance of the corrugated section (AP1) is the optimal among CA models. The higher the frequency, the higher the lift coefficient, which is related to the vein distribution of models. (2) The pressure difference of different corrugation patterns shows significantly asymmetric during the upstroke and downstroke. The leading-edge vortex (LEV) of AP1 is more captured with the increase of frequency than AP2 and AP3. (3) Potentially critical parameters for aerodynamic performance, such as number and angle of the corrugations as well as the flapping frequencies, have been evaluated and discussed. Based on these results, 2D ‘simplified’ airfoil models with triangular corrugations (TWA models) were designed which simulated the optimum aerodynamic characteristics.

Finding appropriate image analysis techniques for a particular purpose can be difficult. In the context of the analysis of immunocytochemistry images, where the key information lies in the number of nuclei containing co-localised fluorescent signals from a marker of interest, researchers often opt to use manual counting techniques because of the paucity of available tools. Here, we present the development and validation of the Fluorescence Imaging of Nuclear Staining (FINS) algorithm for the quantification of fluorescent signals from immunocytochemically-stained cells. The FINS algorithm is based on a variational segmentation of the nuclear stain channel and an iterative thresholding procedure to count co-localised fluorescent signal from nuclear proteins in other channels. We present experimental results comparing the FINS algorithm to the manual counts of seven researchers across a dataset of three human primary cell types which are immunocytochemically-stained for a nuclear marker (DAPI), a biomarker of cellular proliferation (Ki67) and a biomarker of DNA damage (γH2AX). The quantitative performance of the algorithm is analysed in terms of consistency with the manual count data and acquisition time. The FINS algorithm produces data consistent with that achieved by manual counting, but improves the process by reducing subjectivity and time. The algorithm is simple to use, based in software that is omnipresent in academia, and allows data review with its simple, intuitive user interface. We hope that, as the FINS tool is open source and is custom built for this specific application, it will streamline analysis of immunocytochemical images.

The blood cell phosphatidylinositol glycan class A (PIG-A) gene mutation assay has been extensively researched in rodents for in vivo mutagenicity testing and is now being investigated in humans. The PIG-A gene is involved in glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchor biosynthesis. A single mutation in this X-linked gene leads to loss of membrane bound GPI-anchors, which can be enumerated using flow cytometry. With many studies published to date measuring this mutation in erythrocytes, there is remarkable consistency across research groups. Moreover, with the low background level of mutant erythrocytes in healthy subjects (2.9 - 5.56 x 10-6 mutants), induction of mutation post genotoxic exposure can be detected. Cigarette smoking, radiotherapy and occupational exposures including lead, have been shown to increase mutant levels. Identification of harmful agents can allow us to recommend new exposure limits, minimising individual risk. Conversely, protective agents such as aspirin and healthy diets could mitigate these effects, reducing baseline somatic mutation levels and such behaviours can be encouraged. This mutational monitoring approach may also provide information on individuals at higher risk of cancer development. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease, oesophageal adenocarcinoma and pancreatic cancer have elevated numbers of PIG-A mutant erythrocytes compared to age-matched controls. With further technological progress including protocol standardisation and the development of cryopreservation methods to improve GPI-anchor stability, this assay can be widely employed in rural and low-income countries. Here we review the current literature on PIG-A mutation in human subjects and discuss the potential role of this assay in human biomonitoring and disease.

The paper presents the results of a faunistic investigation on the genus Sympetrum in two regions in the SW part of Romania-Timiș Plain (Banat region) and Oltenia region. The faunistic account comprises four species: Sympetrum fonscolombii (Selys, 1840), Sympetrum striolatum (Charpentier, 1840), Sympetrum sanguineum (Müller, 1764) and Sympetrum meridionale (Selys, 1841). The genitalia of the collected species are compared with data from the available literature. Following, an analysis of the European Sympetrum species is provided from the perspective of the classical principles of systematic zoology: the biological species concept, the reproductive isolation of species in Odonata, species delimitation, speciation.

Both Cor-triatriatum and partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection(PAPVC) come under the rare spectrum of congenital heart diseases. These entities may co-exist in a patient or may appear independent of each other. Since their clinical presentation remains the same, it comes down to the cardiac imaging modality used. Here we describe a case of a 45-year female presenting with exertional dyspnea and palpitations who was diagnosed with cor-triatriatum in the preoperative echocardiography which intraoperatively was identified to be PAPVC. This case report highlights the peculiarities of echocardiographic findings in this patient and the importance of multimodal imaging techniques in such cases.

Variationism has long been dominant in sociolinguistic studies of cities. However, a variationist approach, which takes discrete, measurable linguistic features as its unit of analysis, cannot account for all the ways that language use becomes socially meaningful in urban contexts. Drawing on two examples from ethnographic fieldwork in a gentrifying neighborhood in Oslo, Norway, this paper shows how linguistic similarity and difference cannot be assumed, but instead rely on uptakes which vary based on the perspectives being brought to an interaction. In the contested context of a gentrifying neighborhood, claims to speak similarly to or differently from others can become an important resource in making larger claims about the social and political situation. We thus need to consider uptake, as well as production, when analyzing how social meaning and axes of differentiation are created through linguistic interaction.

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous chronic brain disorder driven by multiple pathophysiological processes. While dopaminergic theories dominate current therapies, emerging evidence highlights glutamatergic dysregulation, particularly N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction, as a key mechanism alongside dopaminergic, serotonergic, and neurodevelopmental pathways. This article synthesizes mechanistic insights, focusing on neurotransmitter disruptions, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and Wnt signaling, to elucidate the clinical diversity of schizophrenia and identify biomarkers for precise diagnostics and therapeutics. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed, with keywords including “schizophrenia,” “psychosis,” “pathophysiology,” “mechanism,” and “biomarker.” Studies were selected to explore NMDAR hypofunction, glutamatergic dysregulation, and associated signaling pathways, integrating preclinical and human data to map circuit-based interactions and biomarker profiles. Results: We present a novel circuit-based model of schizophrenia pathophysiology, centered on NMDAR hypofunction and glutamatergic dysregulation, integrating dopaminergic, GABAergic, and inflammatory pathways. Key biomarkers, including inflammatory (e.g., high-sensitivity Creactive protein [hs-CRP], interleukin-6 [IL-6]), neurochemical (e.g., brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF]), and functional (e.g., mismatch negativity [MMN]), are categorized by symptomatic domains and clinical stages, providing diagnostic and prognostic insights. Discussions: The findings underscore NMDAR hypofunction’s role in driving schizophrenia’s symptomatic spectrum, though its interplay with other pathways highlights the disorder’s complexity. Neuronal loss, although not universal, is context-specific (e.g., hippocampal interneurons), complementing functional biomarkers such as MMN. Limitations include the need for robust human validation of biomarkers and broader exploration of non-glutamatergic mechanisms. Conclusion: Considering the multifaceted nature of the disorder, our emphasis on the NMDAR hypofunction model can help explain many of the synergies involved among the seemingly independent dysregulated events.

Background and Purpose: Intermittent explosive disorder is characterized by outbursts of rage and violence. While the 5HT1B receptor is linked to aggression reduction, its neural circuit mechanism remains unclear. Here, we explored the impact of the raphe nucleus projecting to the ventral hippocampus (vHip) on impulsive aggression. Experimental Approach: We used post-weaning social isolation (SI) mice as an animal model and employed the chemogenetic technique to specifically manipulate the activity of neural pathways projecting from either the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) or the median raphe nucleus (MRN) to the vHip. Combining with 5HT1B receptor (5HT1BR) agents, we investigated the impact of serotonergic inputs in the vHip on impulsive aggression. Key Results: By local infusion of Clozapine N-Oxide, activating either DRN soma or DRN nerve terminals in the vHip reduced impulsive aggression. 5-HT1BR antagonist SB-224289 nullified this aggression reduction. Activating the MRN→vHip pathway ameliorated depression-like behavior but not impulsive aggression. DRN→vHip activation decreased c-Fos levels in the vHip and the aggression-control area, the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH). Intra-vHip infusion of 5-HT1BR agonists (anpirtoline, CP-93129) suppressed impulsive aggression and decreased c-Fos levels within the vHip neurons projecting to the VMH, suggesting an inhibition mechanism. Conclusion and Implications: Our findings indicate that activating the DRN, rather than MRN, projecting to the vHip is sufficient to inhibit impulsive aggression in a 5-HT1BR-dependent manner. Thus, targeting 5-HT1BR could serve as a promising therapeutic approach to ameliorate symptoms of impulsive aggression.

Much of the global population now has some level of adaptive immunity to SARS-CoV-2 induced by exposure to the virus (natural infection), vaccination, or a combination of both (hybrid immunity). Key questions that subsequently arise relate to the duration and the level of protection an individual might expect based on their infection and vaccination history. A multi-component composite correlate of risk (CoR) could inform individuals and stakeholders about protection and aid decision making. This perspective evaluates the various elements that need to be accommodated in the development of an antibody-based composite CoR for reinfection with SARS-CoV-2 or development of severe COVID-19, including variation in exposure dose, transmission route, viral genetic variation, patient factors, and vaccination status. We provide an overview of antibody dynamics to aid exploration of the specifics of SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing. We further discuss anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoassays, sample matrices, testing formats, frequency of sampling and the optimal time point for such sampling. Whilst the development of a composite CoR is challenging, we provide our recommendations for each of these key areas and highlight areas that require further work to be undertaken.

Monitoring of sweat pH play important roles in physiological health, nutritional balance, psychological stress, and sports performance. The combination of functional MOFs with phosphorescent material to acquire the real-time physiological information, as well as the ap-plication of dual mode anti-counterfeiting, have seldom been reported. Herein, we reported MOF and phosphorescent dyes based mul-tifunctional gel films with H+ response and the related mechanism was studied in detail. Upon induction of H+, the composite gel film ex-hibited decreased fluorescent signal but enhanced room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), which could be utilized for sweat pH sensing through a dual-mode. Moreover, multifunctional gel films exhibited a potential application in information encryption and an-ti-counterfeiting by designing of stimulus responsive multiple patterns. This research opens a new avenue for portable and non-invasive sweat pH monitoring method, provides opportunities for effective anti-counterfeiting, also offers new insights stimulus-responsive mul-tifunctional materials and their potential applications.

Incidence of antimicrobial-resistant infections has increased dramatically worldwide in the past few decades. To combat this alarming problem, strategies preventing colonization with resistant pathogens have been proposed. Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)may help in decolonizing multidrug-resistant organisms(MRO) and in preventing recurrent infections. In this study, efficacy of FMT against multidrug resistance was assessed. Three patients that suffered from multidrug resistance complicated with diarrhea were enrolled from January 2019 to September 2020. All had severe pulmonary infections. Standard FMT was given, and whole metagenome sequencing of stool was conducted before and after FMT.All patients accepted FMT, and 12 samples were harvested. All treatments were successful, and there were no adverse events. All patients showed a decrease in species of intestinal flora, but FMT could recover some of the diversity. Normal people had the lowest abundance of antimicrobial-resistant genes (ARGs), but the patients had the highest abundance before FMT. FMT decreased ARGs to some extent. Nineteen ARG subtypes were significantly different between the normal group and the patients.Patients with MRO infections had increased abundance of ARGs and low bacterial diversity. FMT eradicated ARGs and restored microbial diversity, and there were no serious adverse events.

In the past researches, polymer materials (PDMS, SU-8, PMMA) have proved to be a preferred material for the fabrication of low-noise nanopores. However, it has always been a challenge to fabricate sub-10 nm nanopores on a thin polymer membrane. In this article, we explored a method of fabrication of nanopores on polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) membrane by the local high electrical field controlled breakdown, which can fast produce sub-2 nm nanopores. Through the improved electric field application method, the nanopore can be fabricated by the instantaneous high electric field 1-7 times higher than the breakdown electric field. The mechanism of the electrical breakdown voltage and current in the formation of nanopores is discussed. Finally, AFM images were also used to characterize the polymer nanopores, which proves the feasibility of fast fabrication method of sub-2 nm low noise polymer nanopores.

Classic Wellen’s syndrome or by some authors described as inverted U waves is consistent of biphasic terminal T waves inversion usually seen in V2 and V3 leads highly predictive of high grade left main (LM) or proximal left anterior ascending artery (LAD) disease. In this case, we are reporting a case of minimal terminal T wave changes not large enough to qualify as Wellen’s EKG but similar to classic Wellen was associated with high grade LM and LAD disease despite negative troponins.
