The future of research communication
Research publishing has been said to be shifting to a more service-oriented field, industry-speak for the observation that, researchers are taking back the control of how their research is shared. Publishers and other stakeholders will serve researchers, not the other way around. For this shift to fully be realized, a large cultural movement will need to occur and new technologies/tools will need to be introduced. Arguably, both are occurring now with preprints servers/communities arising and authorship platforms, like Authorea that allow researchers to put their research online very easily. It's a very powerful thing to give the tools publishers have, including DOI minting, archival, typesetting, and dissemination directly to researchers.
