This study reviewed literature on plastic waste management challenges in Ghana and also identified innovative approaches to effectively manage plastic waste which are illegally dumped (fly-tipped) in forest reserves and public spaces. Fly-tipping exists because of the inability of the municipality to effectively implement sanitation bye-laws, which has compelled residents to complain of delayed collection of wastes in their neighbourhoods. This review also identified gaps in literature such as the ineffectiveness of the sanitation bye-laws at the municipal level. Our study strongly recommends the enforcement of environmental institutional mandates of Ghana Standards Authority, (GSA), Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and suggestions regarding innovative funding options (eg. sanitation and pollution levy) should be enforced for the purposes for which they were created.
