One of the scarcely explored subjects in automotive development is the reduction of software variants for attaining engineering simplicity. On the one hand, variants of functionality allow automakers to explore the customers' needs and tastes. On the other hand, adding software variants increase engineering complexity and production defects. From practice, this paper presents sensible ways for reducing automotive software variants.
