The Zn anode in rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion battery (AZIBs) suffers from hydrogen gas evolution and dendrite growth, which are critical issues making the current AZIB technology immature. Here, these issues are efficiently tackled by forming an amorphous Zn1-xSex protective layer over the Zn foil surface. The anti-corrosion performance of the Zn anode in aqueous electrolyte is greatly improved, and the Zn@Zn1-xSex symmetric cell exhibits notable performance. When combined with a MnO2-based cathode, the button-type full cell using Zn@Zn1-xSex exhibits superior performance.  Pouch cells using high-mass-loading MnO2 cathode and as-prepared Zn anode are made to demonstrate the hydrogen evolution inhibition and some practical applications.
