David E. Hobart earned a BA in Chemistry from Rollins College, Winter Park, FL in 1971, served in the U.S. Air Force, earned a PhD in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1981, and was a postdoc at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN. In 1983 he was a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) NM. In 1993 he was Group Leader at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, CA. In 1995 Hobart was a technical consultant for Sandia National Labs and contributed to the “Compliance Certification Application” license to operate WIPP. In 1999, Hobart rejoined LANL as Actinide Analytical Chemistry Team Leader and Seaborg Institute Guest Scientist. In 2013, Hobart retired and is now research professor at Florida State University, Tallahassee, lecturing and mentoring chemistry graduate students and postdocs, writing journal articles and book chapters, and organizing national and international scientific conferences. Hobart is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is Past-Chair of the ACS Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology, recipient of the 1991 “Rollins College Alumni Achievement Award," the 2019 ACS “Kinard Distinguished Service Award,” and is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society. He is an expert in actinide chemistry relevant to basic research, nuclear waste disposal, and actinide environmental behavior and author of over 80 journal articles and book chapters.
